Applications of Axial Flow Check Valves

Applications of Axial Flow Check Valves

With the construction and expansion of large-scale oil refining and petrochemical projects such as ethylene, the selection of fast closing, low-pressure loss, and noise-resistant check valves are required for pipeline systems with harsh operating conditions such as compressors and large pumps in oil and natural gas long-distance pipeline systems and large ethylene plants. The valve plates of ordinary swing and double plate check valves often have problems such as incomplete opening, unstable medium flow, high-pressure loss, mechanical vibration, and high noise, which affect the normal operation of large compressors and pumps. At this point, it is necessary to use a special type of axial flow check valve to ensure the safe and effective operation of the above-mentioned equipment pipeline system.

Axial Flow Check Valves

Functions
(1) Quickly closing: Compared with swing and double plate check valves, axial flow check valves have a shorter stroke, especially for larger-diameter valves, which can achieve rapid closure.
(2) Minimize the destructive effect of the water hammer in the fluid system. The closure of the axial flow check valve is completely accompanied by the reverse flow of the fluid, and the short stroke ensures a rapid dynamic response of the valve disc, reducing the reverse flow rate through the valve to the minimum, thereby preventing the danger of the water hammer.
(3) Protect rotating equipment from damage caused by fluid backflow. It can completely prevent damage to upstream equipment caused by media backflow.
(4) Minimize pressure loss in the pipeline system. The axial flow check valve adopts a Venturi-style valve internal structure design. When the fluid flows through the valve channel, it is a process of gradual contraction and expansion, minimizing the generation of eddy currents. Eddy currents generate fluid turbulence, which increases pressure loss.
(5) Low mechanical vibration and low noise: Axial flow check valves can achieve true impact-free operation, resulting in low mechanical vibration and corresponding low noise.

Conclusion
Axial flow check valves are currently widely used in oil and gas long-distance pipeline systems, especially in key parts such as compressors in large ethylene plants.
