Manual Valve Operation Tips

Manual Valve Operation Tips

The manual valve, operated by a handle or handwheel, is a valve commonly used on pipelines. Usually, Its handle and handwheel rotate clockwise for closing, counterclockwise for opening. However, there are certain valves that rotate towards the opposite directions to achieve the above moves. Therefore, before the operation, the operator should notice the opening and closing signs.

The handwheel and handle on the valve are designed according to the assumption of the natural man operator, therefore, the valve manual states that the operator is not allowed to open or close the valve with the help of a lever and long spanner. It is allowed that two men operate together with a handwheel or handle with a diameter of 320mm, or one person to operate the valve with the aid of an appropriate lever generally no more than 0.5 m long.

Handwheel and handle of gate valvesglobe valves, and other valves, after the valve being closed or opened completely, are required to turn backward 1/4 to 1/2 turn. It contributes to the better fitting of threads, facilitating the operation. Otherwise, it may incur damage to the valve parts.

Some operators are used to using levers and long spanners, thinking that the greater the closing force the better sealing performance, but in fact, it is not. This may cause premature failure of the valve or even lead to unexpected accidents.
