gate valve refers to a valve in which the opening and closing part (valve plate) is driven by the valve stem to move the sealing surface of the valve seat for lifting movement, and a valve that can open or cut off the passage of the fluid. When the valve is partially opened, an eddy current is generated on the back of the shutter, which is easy to cause erosion and vibration of the gate, and is also easy to damage the sealing surface of the valve seat, which is difficult to repair.

Gate valves are generally suitable for applications that do not require frequent opening and closing, and keep the shutter fully open or fully closed. But they are not suitable to be used for adjustment or throttling.
 
A gate valve has the following advantages:
1 Fluid resistance is small.
2 The external force required for opening and closing is small.
3 The flow direction of the medium is not limited.
4 When fully open, the sealing surface is less affected by the working medium than the shut-off valve.
5 Its body shape is relatively simple, and the casting process is better.
 
Gate valves also have shortcomings:
1 Gate valves' dimensions and opening height are large. So the space required for installation is large.
2 During the opening and closing process, there is friction between the sealing surfaces, which is likely to cause scratches.
3 Gate valves generally have two sealing faces, adding some difficulties to machining, grinding and maintenance.
