Check valves belong to the category of automatic valves and are primarily used in pipelines where the medium must flow in one direction only. They allow flow in a single direction to prevent backflow and potential accidents.
Types of Check Valves
Check valves can be classified based on structure into three main types: lift check valves, swing check valves, and wafer (or butterfly) check valves.● Lift check valvesare further divided into vertical lift and horizontal lift types.● Swing check valvesare categorized into single-disc, double-disc, and multi-disc types.● Wafer (butterfly) check valvesare typically of the straight-through type.Based on connection type, check valves can be threaded, flanged, or welded.
Installation Guidelines
● Support: Do not allow the check valve to bear the weight of the pipeline. Large check valves, particularly rubber-seated types, should be independently supported so that pipeline pressure does not affect the valve.
● Flow Direction: Ensure that the flow direction of the medium matches the arrow indicated on the valve body.
● Lift Check Valves:
Vertical lift valves should be installed on vertical pipelines.
Horizontal lift valves should be installed on horizontal pipelines.
Bottom Valves: Install at the lower end of the suction pipe of pumps.
Flow Alignment: Always ensure that the medium flows in the normal direction indicated by the valve arrow; otherwise, normal flow will be blocked.
● Wafer or Butterfly Check Valves: Typically installed in horizontal pipelines, but can also be used in vertical or inclined pipelines for low-resistance slow-closing applications.
Material Selection and Application
By choosing different materials, check valves can be used for a wide range of media, including water, steam, oils, nitric acid, acetic acid, and oxidizing media.
- Straight-through lift check valves are generally installed in horizontal pipelines.
- Vertical lift valves and bottom valves are usually installed in vertical pipelines, with the medium flowing from bottom to top.
- Swing check valves have flexible installation positions, commonly installed in horizontal pipelines.
- Wafer (butterfly) check valves can be installed in horizontal, vertical, or inclined pipelines depending on specific application requirements.
